The next time you are upset about short winter days, think about Utqiagvik, Alaska. The locals of America’s northernmost town experienced their final sunset of 2024 on November 19. They had to wait until January 23, 2025 to see the Sun again.

Utqiagvik’s long polar night(极夜) is because of its location, just 1,300 miles south of the North Pole. During the winter, areas near the poles tilt away from(偏离) the Sun, leaving them with little or no sunlight.
While the locals of Utqiagvik will not see the Sun, they will still have some light during the day. The Sun appears below the horizon(地平线) and the sunshine is similar to the light we see at sunrise before the Sun fully rises. It creates beautiful blue, orange, and pink colors as the Sun shines through the Earth’s atmosphere(大气层).
Utqiagvik is the first Alaskan town to experience a polar night each year, but it is not the only one. In the coming weeks, people in Kaktovik, Point Hope, and Anaktuvuk Pass will also say goodbye to the Sun for a few months. Northern countries of Finland, Norway and Sweden also experience this situation.
People in these areas are well rewarded(回报) for going through the dark and cold winters. During the summer, they enjoy the midnight Sun when the Sun stays both day and night in the sky. For Utqiagvik, this means no sunset from May 12, 2025, to July 31, 2025!
