DAY 5 阅读理解 人与社会(文化) | 说明文 | 词数: 215+200 | 难度: ★★★★☆ | 建议用时: 8 min | 答案册: P3
新趋势·拓展国际视野 The BBC celebrated its 100th anniversary(周年纪念日) on Oct 18th, 2022. To celebrate the day, it brought out a 100-second video showing BBC hosts(节目主持人) had made silly mistakes or had forgotten their words. This is quite typical of British humor.
British people like to make fun of themselves and laugh at just about anything. They'll make fun of each other, lightly insulting(冒犯) one another and then laughing about it. For example, if a man is tripped(绊倒) by his friend, his friend may say, "Enjoy your trip?"
British people often say one thing but mean another. For example, a man has got a bad haircut and his friend says, "Wow, that's the best haircut I've ever seen" when they both know it's really bad. Similar to this is the understatement(轻描淡写的陈述), like saying "It's a bit windy" when there's a huge storm outside.
British people also love their awkward(令人尴尬的) situations. The British can be quite awkward people, not knowing what to say in social situations or saying the wrong thing to the wrong people, or just being a bit strange in public. Mr Bean making a fool of himself in front of people is a good example.
So, the next time you meet a British person and don't understand their humor, don't worry. It's very common.
