When Elizabeth Cotten was young, she liked playing his brother's banjo(班卓琴). She was left-handed, 1A she decided to turn the banjo over and taught herself to play it. She used her thumb(大拇指) to play the 2C notes and used her other fingers for the low ones. This 3B way of playing later became known as "Cotten Style".

Elizabeth Cotten was born in 1893. When she was 11, she saved money by looking after babies and 4D her first guitar named Stella. At the age of 12, she had written a 5C called Freight Train. Even though she was very talented in music, Cotten got married and decided to focus on her 6A. Later, she with her new baby left her husband in the 1940s.
To 7C her daughter's new baby, Cotten cleaned and cooked at the home of the Seegers, a musical family. One day, the family heard her playing the guitar and were 8D by her skills. They encouraged her to 9C her music. In 1958, she finally recorded her first album and started 10D in public. Later on, her music became 11B, and she performed at some important events like the Newport Folk Festival and Carnegie Hall in 1978.
In 1984, Cotten 12A a Grammy Award for her contribution to music. She passed away when she was 94 years old. Her old 1950 Martin guitar is now 13A at a museum. The worn(磨损的) marks on the guitar show 14B she played it. Also they reminded everyone 15C her creativity(创造性) and special place in music history.
