DAY 5 阅读理解 人与自然(自然生态) | 说明文 | 词数: 218+156 | 难度: ★★★★☆ | 建议用时: 8 min | 答案册: P8
There are three kinds of elephants, the Asian elephant, the African savanna(稀树草原) elephant and the African forest elephant. These are the main kinds while the Asian elephant is further divided into a few subspecies(亚种). Today, let's talk about Asian elephants.
Asian elephants are well-known for being smaller than African ones. However, there are more differences besides their sizes. Asian elephants don't all have tusks(长牙). In fact,it's more common for them to have no tusks. Some male elephants may have tusks, while female elephants don't have.
Asian elephants also have a convex(凸出的) back and one "finger" on the tip of the trunk for picking up food. Asian elephants have a close connection with each other. They live in groups, and a female elephant is the leader of a group. Males will leave their group once they're strong and have been given up by their mothers between the ages of seven and ten. From then, males will join other groups and look for female groups only to mate(交配). For some reasons, they usually only have a few children.
These are the features(特征) among all Asian elephants. However, some physical features are different between the subspecies. There are three subspecies of them, including the Indian elephant, the Sri Lankan elephant and the Sumatran elephant.
