Meerkats(狐獴) are a kind of small animal. They might become famous and popular because of a TV show and a movie. The TV show is called Meerkat Manor and it tells more facts about meerkats. Do you know Timon in the Disney movie The Lion King? Timon is a meerkat.

Many meerkats live in Kalahari Desert in South Africa. They are good at digging underground tunnels(洞穴通道). They stay in the tunnels during the night. When they see predators(捕食者), they run back into the tunnels. They can stay safe this way.
Meerkats are omnivores. That means they eat both plants and animals. They usually eat insects, but they also eat snakes, eggs, fruit and some others. They can even eat some poisonous (有毒的) snakes. They don't have a lot of body fat, so they need to eat every day to keep their energy up.
They live in family groups. Their family group typically has about 20 members, but sometimes it grows to as many as 50 members. They help each other. They look for food and take care of babies together.
Meerkats have a special skill. They can stand up very straight on their hind(后面的) legs. They can use their tails to keep balance. When they stand up, they can get as high as possible and then they can see their predators easily.
