Guan and Bao were good friends. Guan came from a poor(贫穷的) family. When he and Bao did business together, Guan put less money into the business but took more out in the end. People around Bao were very angry about this. But Bao said that Guan did so because he was poor, not because he was greedy(贪婪的).
Later, Guan served(效忠于) Prince Jiu while Bao served Prince Xiaobai. These two princes fought to be the king of Qi, and Prince Xiaobai won. Prince Xiaobai wanted to kill Guan, but Bao saved him in time. The new king wanted Bao to be the Prime Minister(宰相). But Bao said Guan could better help the king rule(统治) the state. The king agreed and chose Guan as the Prime Minister. Finally, with the help of Guan, Qi became a great state.
Whatever Guan did, Bao always tried to understand him. Now Chinese people still use guanbao zhijiao to mean true friendship.
