侦探菲克斯正徘徊在苏伊士码头,监视着所有来往的人,等待着“蒙古号”船的到达,看是否能找到嫌疑人。此时,他显得有点心烦意乱。
名著文本
Awaiting the arrival of the Mongolia were two men, walking about the quay amid the crowd of natives and foreigners who flock to this town, which was but lately a mere village, and is now assured of considerable importance in the future by M. de Lesseps's great work. Of these two men, one was the British consul, resident at Suez, who, in spite of the unfavourable prognostications of the British Government and sinister predictions of the engineer, Stephenson, daily saw English ships pass through the canal, thus shortening by half the old route from England to India via the Cape of Good Hope. The other was a thin little man, fairly intelligent - looking and wiry, who kept on knitting his eyebrows with remarkable persistency. Through his long eyelashes shone a pair of very bright eyes, which he could make dull at will. At this particular moment he was showing certain signs of impatience, walking to and fro, and unable to stand still. This man's name was Fix. He was one of the English detectives who were sent to the different ports after the theft committed at the Bank of England. Fix was to keep the sharpest lookout on all travellers going through Suez, and should one of them seem suspicious, he was to shadow him until he received a warrant for his arrest. And two days before, Fix had received the description of the supposed culprit from the Chief of the Metropolitan Police. It was that of the well - dressed, gentlemanly person who had been noticed in the pay - room of the Bank.
