The detective made his way briskly down the quay to the consulate, where his urgent request to be admitted to the consul’s presence was granted.
侦探急忙沿着码头向领事馆走去。根据他的急切请求,领事立即接见了他。
“Sir,” said he, going straight to the point, “I have strong reasons for presuming that the man I am after is a passenger on board the *Mongolia*.” He then related the incident of the passport.
“先生,”他开门见山地说,“我有充分的理由认为我要抓的人是‘蒙古号’上的一名乘客。”然后他把护照的事讲给了领事听。
“Well, Mr Fix,” replied the consul, “I should rather like to see the rascal’s face. But I dare say he won’t show himself in my office, if he is the sort of man you think him. A thief does not care to leave traces of his itinerary behind him; moreover, passports are no longer obligatory.”
“好,菲克斯先生,”领事回答说,“我倒很想见识一下那个无赖的嘴脸。不过,如果他是您认为的那种人,我想他是不会出现在我的办公室的。一个窃贼是不喜欢在身后留下踪迹的。再说,现在护照也不再是必须提供的了。”
“Sir,” replied the detective, “if he is the clever fellow I take him for, he will come.”

“To have his passport visaed?” “Yes, passports have but one use; to be a nuisance to honest people and assist the flight of rogues. I can assure you this passport will be in order, but I hope you will not visa it.” “Why not?” answered the consul. “If the passport is all right, I have no right to refuse my visa.” “Still, sir, I am bound to keep the man here until I get a warrant from London.” “Ah, that is your business, Mr Fix; but I cannot...”
“来办签证手续？”“是的。护照从来就是给正人君子添麻烦而便于混蛋逃跑的玩意儿。我敢断定他的护照不会有问题,但我希望您别给他签证。”“为什么不签？”领事回答道,“如果他的护照没有问题,我无权拒签。”“可是,先生,我必须把此人拖在这里,一直等到我拿到来自伦敦的逮捕令。”“啊！菲克斯先生,那是您的事了,但我不能……”
The consul’s sentence was not finished; there was a knock at the door and the office-boy introduced two strangers, one of whom was no other than the servant who had spoken to the detective on the quay. With him was his master, who produced his passport, and, in a few words, requested the favour of the consul’s visa. The latter took the passport and read it attentively, while Fix observed or rather greedily eyed the stranger from a corner of the room.
领事的话还没说完,就听见有人在敲他办公室的门。听差领进来两个陌生人,其中一个就是在码头和侦探说过话的那个仆人,跟他一起来的是他的主人。主人呈上自己的护照,言简意赅地请领事费心在他的护照上盖上印鉴。领事接过护照,仔细地看着,坐在办公室一角的菲克斯则在打量着,或者可以说是死死地盯着这个陌生人。
“You are Mr Phileas Fogg?” queried the consul, when he had finished reading the passport. “Yes.” “And this man is your servant?” “Yes. A Frenchman called Passepartout.” “Do you come from London?” “Yes.” “And you are going to...?” “Bombay.” “Very good, sir. You know that a visa is a formality of no value, and that travellers are no longer required to show passports?” “I am aware of this, sir,” replied Phileas Fogg, “but I want to prove by your visa that I passed through Suez.”
领事看完护照后问道：“您是菲利亚·福格先生？”“是的。”“这位是您的仆人？”“是的,他是法国人,叫‘路路通’。”“您从伦敦来？”“是的。”“您要去……？”“孟买。”“很好,先生。您知道吗,这种签证手续已经没用了,我们也不再要求旅客呈验护照了？”“这我知道,先生。”菲利亚·福格回答道,“不过,我想通过您的签证证明我经过了苏伊士。”
“All right, sir.”
“好吧,先生。”
The consul then signed and dated the passport, and stamped it with his official seal.
领事在护照上签了字,写上了日期,盖上了自己的公章。
Mr Fogg paid the required fee, bowed stiffly, and went out, followed by his servant.
福格先生按规定缴了签证费,向领事生硬地点头致意后,带上自己的仆人出去了。
