Hulun Buir Grassland
Under the vast sky is the boundless wild.
The wind bends the grasses low,
where cows and sheep show.
(天苍苍,野茫茫,
风吹草低见牛羊。)
Created about 1,500 years ago by nomadic (游牧的) people living in North China, The Song of Chile represents vividly the view of Hulun Buir Grassland with herds of cattle and sheep on the lush pastures (牧场).
In the north-east of North China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region lies Hulun Buir Grassland that covers an area of about 100,000 square kilometres. Being recognised as one of the world's four largest grasslands, Hulun Buir Grassland boasts the largest and most complete ecosystem in China. Colourful wild fruits on the trees and mushrooms on the forest floor provide wild animals living here with sumptuous (豪华的) meals. The grassland is weaved with rivers. The rivers and lakes nurture a vast stretch of wetlands, forming a unique grassland-wetland ecosystem. With wild ducks and swans frolicking (嬉戏) on the lake, it is a paradise for migratory birds and other wild animals.
The Ewenki tribe in the forest zone is known as the "Reindeer Tribe". The forest has become inseparable from their life, being part of the fairy tale of the Greater Khingan Range (大兴安岭).
Mongolians living on the grassland for generations are the most populous ethnic minority group in the region. Many of them live in cone-shaped yurts, preserving their traditional lifestyle.
Hulun Buir Grassland once faced threats from increasing human activities as overgrazing destroyed its ecosystem. To protect this wonderland, the Chinese government adopted the policy called "returning grazing land to grassland", trying to repair and bring back a balanced ecosystem. After a decade of ecological treatment, birds chirping, grass growing and water splashing, Hulun Buir Grassland has experienced improved biodiversity.
