Such power amazed the little prince. If he had wielded it himself, he could have watched not forty-four but seventy-two, or even a hundred, even two hundred sunsets on the same day without ever having to move his chair!  “I'd like to see a sunset... Do me a favor, Your Majesty... Command the sun to set...”
这样的权力使小王子惊叹不已。他如果拥有这样的权力,那么一天就不是看四十四次,而是七十二次,一百次,甚至两百次日落,连椅子都不用挪一挪! 由于想起被他遗弃的小星球,他感到非常难过,所以就壮着胆子向国王提出一个请求:“我想看一次日落……帮我个忙,陛下……命令太阳下山……”
“If I commanded a general to fly from one flower to the next like a butterfly, or to write a tragedy, or to turn into a seagull, and if the general did not carry out my command, which of us would be in the wrong, the general or me?”
“要是我命令一个将军像蝴蝶一样从一朵花儿飞到另一朵花儿,或者让他写一部悲剧,或者让他变成一只海鸥,而这个将军拒不执行命令,那是谁的错,是他的还是我的呢?”
“You would be,” said the little prince, quite firmly.
“那是您的错。”小王子肯定地说。
“Exactly. One must command from each what each can perform,” the king went on. “Authority is based first of all upon reason. If you command your subjects to jump in the ocean, there will be a revolution. I am entitled to command obedience because my orders are reasonable.”
“正是如此。得让每个人去做他能做到的事情。”国王接着说,“权威首先得建立在合理的基础上。如果你命令你的臣民都去投海,他们就会造反。我之所以有权让人服从,就是因为我的命令都是合情合理的。”
“Then my sunset?” insisted the little prince, who never let go of a question once he had asked it.
“那么我想看的日落呢?”小王子坚持说,他对自己提过的问题是不会忘记的。
“You shall have your sunset. I shall command it. But I shall wait, according to my science of government, until conditions are favorable.”
“你会看到日落的。我会要它下山的。不过按照我的统治原则,要等到条件成熟的时候。”
“And when will that be?” inquired the little prince.
“要等到什么时候呢?”小王子问。
“Well, well!” replied the king, first consulting a large calendar. “Well, well! That will be around... around... that will be tonight around seven forty! And you'll see how well I am obeyed.”
“嗯! 嗯!”国王先翻看一本厚厚的日历,然后回答说,“嗯! 嗯! 要等到大概……大概……要等到今晚大概七点四十分! 你会看到它乖乖地服从我的命令的。”
The little prince yawned. He was regretting his lost sunset. And besides, he was already growing a little bored. “I have nothing further to do here,” he told the king. “I'm going to be on my way!”
小王子打了个哈欠。看不到日落让他感到挺遗憾。再说他也已经有点腻烦了。“我在这儿没什么事可做了。”他对国王说,“我要走了!”
“Do not leave!” answered the king, who was so proud of having a subject. “Do not leave; I shall make you my minister!”
“别走!”国王回答说,他有了一个臣民,正骄傲着呢,“别走,我任命你当大臣!”
