Yu Opera is one of the five main operas in China. It is the country's leading local opera with the largest number of performers. In its early stage,it had another name Henan clapper opera(Henan bangzi). It was only after the 1950s that Yu Opera became its official( 官方的) title. Yu Opera is welcome in Henan and other provinces, including Hebei, Shandong, Shanxi, and Hubei, making it one of the most popular operas in China.
Yu Opera was born at the end of the Ming Dynasty and the beginning of the Qing Dynasty. In the beginning,it was only a simple performance without any music or make-up. After 1911,Yu Opera was performed in famous teahouses in the cities in Henan Province, where it could compete with Beijing Opera. Later, there were troupes( 剧团) of Yu Opera in China.
