According to China Culture Daily,by the end of 2022,China had signed key documents(文件)on cultural and tourism cooperation(合作)with 157 countries and regions, and has agreed on more than 800 plans for cultural exchanges.
These efforts have brought new chances for people-to-people exchanges. For example,Thailand said Chinese people would no longer need a visa(签证)to visit the country, starting from March 1,2024. As of March 18,China allows people from 163 countries and regions to enter without a visa.
Melina Weber is a German student studying at Beijing Language and Culture University. She had a lot of friends who wanted to visit her but gave up because of the visa. “Now buy a plane ticket, get on the plane, and there they are. So,it is going to help improve people-to-people exchanges,” she said.
During these exchanges, people from different cultures will be able to increase understanding.
Susan,a student from the south of the US,told a story of giving gifts. She said that giving a gift can be competitive in her hometown. “If you give me a gift,I have to give you a better one,” she said. After being in China, however, she found that when Chinese people receive a gift from others, they often give a gift in return to be polite. The return gift doesn't have to be better,it just has to show the person's respect and feelings toward the receiver.
Susan is not the only foreigner in China who feels that cultural shock has given them the chance to better understand people from different cultures.
“No matter if it's between two countries or between friends, communication is the key to a good relationship,” said Weber.
1. Why did Weber's friends give up visiting China before? (
A. Because they were too busy.
B. Because they didn't like China.
C. Because they had visa problems.
D. Because they didn't have enough money.
2. What is the difference in gift-giving between Susan's hometown and China according to Susan? (
A. Chinese people return gifts to show their wealth(财富).
B. People in China give fewer gifts than those in Susan's hometown.
C. Gifts in Susan's hometown are more expensive than those in China.
D. People in Susan's hometown have to give a better gift back if they get a gift from others.
3. What would be the best title for the passage? (

C. Gift-giving Cultures around the World
D. Communication Is the Key to a Good Relationship
