The popularity of skateboarding has risen and fallen since more than half a century ago, much like skateboarders themselves.
Skateboarding began in California in the 1950s. The first skateboards were wooden boxes with roller skate(溜冰鞋) wheels under the bottom. They became so popular that skateboard companies soon formed. Later, better skateboards were built with rounded fronts like the boards of today.
By the 1960s, worries about skateboard injuries(伤害) caused a big drop in sales. The high number of skateboard accidents led to many people declining skateboarding. City officials(官员) strongly advised stores not to sell skateboards and parents not to buy them. Children did not wear helmets (hard hats that could protect their heads) in those days, and the wheels were made of special clay that couldn’t be controlled easily. As there were no skate parks, skateboarders skated on the streets. They got traffic into trouble and made people who were walking in the streets feel upset.
In 1972, a young player named Frank Nasworthy came up with the idea of using a soft material to make wheels we have today. The wheels could hold the ground more closely, allowing for a smoother(更平滑的) ride. In 1978, Alan Gelfand developed the first modern trick(技巧), called the “Ollie” by his friend Scott Goodman, where he jumped with his skateboard connected with his feet. The first modern trick was reinvented by Rodney Mullen later. The trick is now the basic skill for most skateboarding tricks today.
Now, skateboarding has grown in popularity all over the world. The sport can be practiced anywhere. Even older generations(一代人) who used to skate in their youth enjoy skateboarding again.
1. What does Paragraph 2 mainly talk about? (
A. The companies of skateboards.
B. The tricks of skateboarding.
C. The inventors of skateboarding.
D. The development of skateboards.
2. What does the underlined word “declining” in Paragraph 3 mean? (
A. Supporting.
B. Keeping.
C. Inventing.
D. Refusing.
3. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage? (
A. Skateboarders in the 1960s often wore helmets.
B. Skateboarding has always been popular since it began.
C. Scott Goodman invented the first modern trick — the “Ollie”.
D. Older generations who skated in their youth still enjoy skateboarding.

3. D。由短文最后一句“Even older generations(一代人) who used to skate in their youth enjoy skateboarding again.”可知,年轻时滑过滑板的老一代人仍然喜欢滑板运动,D选项正确;A选项,根据第三段“Children did not wear helmets (hard hats that could protect their heads) in those days”可知20世纪60年代的滑板者不戴头盔,A错误;B选项,根据第三段“By the 1960s, worries about skateboard injuries(伤害) caused a big drop in sales.”可知滑板运动并非一直受欢迎,B错误;C选项,根据第四段“In 1978, Alan Gelfand developed the first modern trick(技巧), called the “Ollie” by his friend Scott Goodman”可知是Alan Gelfand发明了第一个现代技巧“Ollie”,C错误。所以选D。
