Do you like reading newspapers? Do you like the stories in newspapers? Several factors (因素) make a good newspaper story.
First, it must be new. But since TV can react to events so quickly, this is often a problem for newspapers. They usually do with it as follows — one by providing more details, comments and background information to react, one by finding a new angle on the day’s major stories and one by printing completely different stories which TV doesn’t broadcast. What else? Well, people do not want to read about ordinary, everyday life. Because of this, many stories involve some kind of conflict (冲突) or danger. This is one reason why so much news seems to be bad news. “The plane lands safely — no one hurt” doesn’t sell newspapers, while “The plane crashes — 200 feared dead!” does.
Next, there’s human interest. People are interested in other people — especially in the rich and famous. Stories about the private lives of pop singers, actors, models, politicians, for example, all appear regularly in certain newspapers.
______, for many editors, familiarity is an important factor, too. They prefer stories about people and places that their readers know. That’s why the stories in Tokyo’s newspapers are often very different from the stories printed in Paris, Cairo or New York.
9题简略回答问题;10题在文中的横线处填写一个恰当的单词;11题找出并写下全文的主题句;12题从文中找出与所给句子意义相近的句子;13题将文中画线句子译成汉语。
9. Besides more details, what else do newspapers provide to react?
