A group of teenagers in San Antonio are making a difference in the lives of those in need. They are led by Teens Give Back SATX.
“Having a bed at night after a long day of work or school is comfortable,” said Addie Roberts with Teens Give Back SATX. With this in mind, Roberts and her friends decided to reuse used plastic bags. They wanted to make them become something important for San Antonio’s homeless people.
Each sleeping mat(垫子) needs about 700 to 900 bags. It can take 15—20 hours to finish. Although making these mats needs a lot of time and hard work, these teenagers still try to make a difference to their community. Over the past year, this group of teenagers have made about 50 mats. It has changed many homeless people’s lives.
“In some temperatures, the mats can save lives by keeping people off the ground,” said Rex Brien, vice president of Services Emergency for SAMMinistries. As the teenagers continue their work, they invite others to join their cause and make a difference.

As we all know, fresh flowers can make a room look and smell good. They also have some magic power(力量).
Martin lay in the hospital for weeks after falling from a building in 2011. He faced a lot of surgeries(手术) and began losing hope. Martin’s friends and family members came to visit him. They brought him fresh flowers each day. Then something wonderful happened. Martin’s condition started to improve, and he looked towards the future with more hope.
Martin soon realized that other patients(病人) around him didn’t get the same kindness. This made him go from room to room, giving away his flowers to them. The results were amazing. He watched people’s misery turn into happiness.
After leaving the hospital, Martin couldn’t forget the power of his flowers. Six months later, to help more people, he started a project called Simple Sunflower Project. He collected used flowers from some events like weddings(婚礼) and then the flowers were given to people in hospitals and the old people’s homes. In the first year, the project served no more than 100 people. But in the following 12 years, it gave away flowers to nearly 30,000 people.
Many studies have found that fresh flowers as well as plants are good for people’s health. Flowers could make the patients less stressed and less painful(痛苦的). Patients with flowers have shorter hospital stays as well. Flowers make a great difference.
