On Friday morning, Katie hurried to her classroom to meet her best friend, Sarah, to work on their science project. The two girls were testing plant food mixtures on the same type of plant. Every morning, the girls measured the plants height to see whether they grew taller. In the afternoon, they took turns watering the plants with different types of food mixtures.
The four plants had been standing tall on Wednesday afternoon. However, they hung dangerously low now. Katie touched the soil and discovered that it was almost dry. “Oh, no!” she said to herself. “Sarah must have forgotten to water them yesterday!” She stared at the plants worriedly and didn’t know what to do.
Knowing this, Sarah felt terrible and said, “I’m sorry, Katie. I was in a hurry to get to the softball practice yesterday afternoon, and I forgot to water the plants.”
Katie didn’t want to be angry with Sarah. Whenever they worked on a project together, Sarah always had wonderful ideas though sometimes she wasn’t responsible.
“What do we do now?” Katie asked Sarah. “Do you think our project will be ruined?”
“No. Let’s try to save the project,” Sarah suggested. She looked thoughtful as she touched the soil.
