亮点原创 Being the main river of Paris, the Seine collects the pieces of human progress and civilization(文明)over time. Over the centuries,it has served as a protective barrier,a water source,a drainage system(排水系统)and a place for washing clothes,National Geographic reported.

Worries over water safety
The river played an important role in the opening ceremony(开幕式)of the 2024 Olympics on July 26. It was also where the triathlon(铁人三项赛)and swimming marathon events took place.
In the 17th century, swimming in the Seine was very popular. But for the last hundred years,it has been prohibited(禁止)due to health and safety concerns.
Over the past decade,Paris has spent about 1.4 billion euros(about 11 billion yuan)on a project to restore the river's ecosystem and ensure its safety for people. However, test results in April still showed high levels of bacteria in the river, according to a French water charity.
Making a cleaner river
To solve the problem, the city built a big storage basin(蓄水池). The basin is 30 metres deep and the size of a dozen Olympic swimming pools. The basin collects rainwater. When the water in the basin meets the required health criteria,it is poured into the Seine. This way,the condition of the Seine would improve, and it would have cleaner water.
Professor Ted Steiner at the University of British Columbia,Canada said that it's possible to clean up a river because the water's flowing. “Especially if you've got the appropriate(适当的)volume of water running through the river, things get diluted(稀释)to a point where there's not a whole lot of risk.”
1. The Seine has served as a protective barrier,a water source,a drainage system and a place for ________ for centuries.
2. People mustn't ________ in the river in the last hundred years.
3. The city has taken action to make the river clean by ________.
4. Ted Steiner thought there is possibility to ________.
