In the Sanxingdui Museum, there is a huge bronze figure statue (青铜人雕像). It is widely known as the Large Standing Figure. It is 262 centimeters in height and weighs about 180 kilograms.
The statue had been sleeping at the site of Sanxingdui for thousands of years before it was discovered in 1986. Among China’s ancient bronze figure statues that have been found so far, this one is the largest and the oldest of its kind.
The statue has two parts: a figure and a base. The figure is a serious-looking man with big eyes and a hooked (钩状的) nose. He stands barefoot on top of a base. It seems that he is about to rise into the clouds.
The biggest mystery is about the figure’s pose. His large hands are raised in front of his chest, with his fingers forming two circles. It seems that he was once holding something in his two hands, but researchers still have no idea what he was holding. Then, what was this mysterious man? There are mainly two versions about his identity (身份). Some experts believe that he was a wizard (巫师), while others think that he was a great ruler.
Since no written records have been found at Sanxingdui, the role of the figure still remains a mystery. And it won’t be easy to solve the mysteries about him.
*The word “barefoot” means not wearing anything on the feet.
