狗拉雪橇大赛
Mushers (雪橇赶狗人) and dogs swarmed around them at the racetrack (赛道). While Sunshine and Foxy walked to their tethers (拴绳), Susie decided that Fudge would take the lead. She wanted so much for him to lead her team, but could she win with him? After race officials checked her sled (雪橇) and team, she took part in the Three Dog Junior Sprint Race and drew the Number Five position.
Mom tied the Number Five card on Susie’s overcoat as Susie read the race trail (踪迹) map of the three - mile course. Then she led her team to the line - up of mushers and teams who waited at the starting line. Climbing on her runners, she talked to her dogs to quiet them as the countdown (倒计时) started.
Team One, then Two, Three, and Four hurried off from the starting line.
“▲,” the loudspeaker shouted.
“Hike!”Susie said, and her dogs sprang forward. With his legs stretched wide, Fudge led the way.
“Stay calm,” Susie thought as they dashed over the course. “Watch for trail markers. Keep your eyes peeled for other teams. Balance and pedal to help the dogs.”
“Gee! Gee! Gee!” she called to Fudge as they approached (接近) a bend in the trail. “Good!” she said when he made a perfect right turn.
His tongue out, eyes alert, Fudge rushed, ignoring the crowd and the noise, doing everything she asked and working just for her. Breathless miles later, Susie and her dogs crossed the finish line.
She and Fudge watched as the race marshal posted her score. Susie didn’t win. She looked out over the empty race field, her hand on Fudge’s furry head. She didn’t feel as disappointed as she had expected. How could she feel sorry for herself after watching this valiant (勇敢的) little husky?
They didn’t win, but Fudge ran like a champion, doing his absolute best. And there is always next winter to try again for the champion.
