Around the world, people have different traditional foods to celebrate different festivals. Traditional foods for the New Year show good luck and good health.
An English Christmas dinner is a meal of turkey. Germans celebrate Christmas with bread, cookies and cakes. They are made like Christmas trees. In the south of India, there is a four-day festival in mid-January called Pongal. People have a dish of rice cooked with sugar.
The Japanese celebrate the New Year with a three-day festival. It begins from January 1st. They cook food before the festival so people don't need to cook during the festival. On New Year's Day, people can have different dishes—each dish is a wish for the coming new year.
People in China get their food ready ahead of time. They don't want to use a knife during the Spring Festival because they think it might "cut luck". Foods with lucky names are popular, such as fish. It sounds like "余" in Chinese.
