答案:
1. B 词义猜测题。根据“How much do you ask for your birds?”可知,Mr Smith 向男孩询问笼中鸟的价钱;根据“Twenty-five cents for any one,sir”可知,男孩回答了Mr Smith 的问题。

Bill looked at him. The man wore an expensive suit and nice shoes. Why was he out here in the sun, without a hat?
They drove for an hour before they got to Bill's house.
Bill left the man asleep in the car. He went into the house and told his wife, Emily, about the man. Emily always knew what to do. "We must find out who he is and then phone his home," she said. "Let's look in his pockets. Perhaps there's something with his name on it."
Bill and Emily went to the car. They found a wallet in the man's pocket.
There was a name—John Phillips—and a telephone number. There was also some money.
"This money is twenty-five years old!" said Bill to Emily. "Why has he got old money?"
"John Phillips," said Emily to the man, "you're very interesting." John suddenly opened his eyes and looked at her, smiling.
"Can you walk?" Emily asked John. He got up slowly. "You're ill. Let's put you into bed." Carefully, they helped John out of the car.
Bill's dog saw John and was afraid. He ran away and sat under a tree. Bill and Emily helped John upstairs and into bed. Ten minutes later he slept again.
In the kitchen, Emily said, "I don't understand this... It's not right. He's different... It's... Oh, I don't know...""I don't want him in our house. I'm afraid of him," said Bill.
"I know. I'm afraid too. Let's call the Flying Doctor," said Emily. "Then we must talk to his family." Bill picked up the telephone and called the doctor. He told the doctor about John Phillips.
