语言是活的——新词新意层出不穷
Near the end of 2023, Oxford University Press (牛津大学出版社) decided on its 2023 Word of the Year: rizz. Many people were puzzled.
“Rizz? Is there such a word?” they asked. At the same time, many young English speakers laughed out loud. “Jeepers, haven’t you ever heard of rizz?”
Rizz means the ability to attract (吸引) a person. Are you good at making friends? Do your classmates laugh loudly at your jokes? If the answer is “yes”, then you may have rizz. You can also use rizz as a verb and say “to rizz up someone”, which means to attract someone. The word first appeared on social media as teen slang (俚语) and became popular after the Spider-Man actor Tom Holland said he had “no rizz”.
Rizz isn’t the only hot slang word, though. “Jeepers” is another. People use it to express surprise. And the word “tea” is no longer just a “drink”. It also means “gossip (流言飞语)”. Similarly, in China, words like “xianyanbao (a clown)” have a new meaning. Teens are also saying “dazi (a pal)” and “qimengle (What)”.
When we look back on 2023, one thing stands out: artificial intelligence (人工智能). Computers have become cleverer than ever. ChatGPT and some other AI systems have “rizzed up” many users with their ability to write long articles, compose poems (作诗) and draw pictures. But they can only use the language. Can ChatGPT coin a slang word and make it popular? Can it give a word new meanings? Can it change how we humans speak and write?
You should be proud of your ability to play with words. But when you try to create slang words, remember to be polite. Don’t use slang in your compositions—it won’t “rizz up” your teachers!
