D
A well-organized backpack helps to make sure that your child has everything needed for school. Problems start when it becomes overloaded. Having a heavy backpack can lead to bad posture, back pain and worse.
The problem is so common that the American Occupational Therapy Association created National School Backpack Awareness Day. It’s held every September to share ideas and solve backpack problems to keep kids safe.
You can protect your kids by making sure that their backpacks are properly fitted and loaded. Here’s some advice.
When shopping for a backpack, make sure that its width and length match each child’s body. It shouldn’t hang more than 4 inches below the waist. The bottom of the backpack should be close to the curve of the child’s lower back — if it shakes back and forth, spine problems can develop.
Other features to focus on include wide and adjustable shoulder belts. A waist, hip and chest belt will reduce the load. A backpack with many compartments allows for its contents to be well spaced. For traffic safety, the backpack should have reflective parts that will help car drivers see your child in low light conditions.
Before loading the backpack, have your child put it on and adjust the belts for a fit. Put the heaviest things at the back of the backpack. Arrange the contents so things won’t slide around as your child moves.
When filled, a backpack shouldn’t weigh more than 5% to 10% of your child’s weight, so 8 pounds are at most for a child who weighs 80 pounds. Don’t guess — test it on your own. If the backpack is too heavy, take out a book or another thing that your child can carry in his or her hands or store in a locker.
Finally, make sure your child wears the backpack on his or her back and not depend on just one shoulder.

根据文中倒数第二段中的“When filled, a backpack shouldn’t weigh more than 5% to 10% of your child’s weight”可知,书包的重量最多不能超过孩子体重的10%,所以一个体重100磅的孩子的书包最多不要超过10磅。

When I told my mother that I was taking up marathon (马拉松) running at the age of 60, she thought I was mad. I saw it as a way of keeping my physical and mental health as I entered my older years. 36 I suppose that just highlights how my generation has come to understand the value of self-care compared with our parents, who believed later life meant a less active one.
37 I realized I needed to look after myself better so I started running on the seafront near my home, as well as in the gym.
When I was 59, I saw a 93-year-old being interviewed on TV, who was running the London Marathon, and I felt inspired With my sixties round the corner, I didn’t want to sit back and let my health decline (衰退). 38 I wanted to set myself goals. If a 93-year-old could run a marathon, so could I!
Since then I’ve run 12 marathons — once a year. 39 I have some diseases, but because I’m fit and strong, I can manage the conditions and they don’t stop me leading a normal life.
40 I live a happy as well as interesting life. I want to live an active life and look after my body and health.
A.However, she was worried I was too old.
B. And with a marathon every year, I’m never bored.
C. I also didn’t want time to pass without a clear purpose.
D. I took up running in my mid-fifties because of ill health.
E. My mother passed away earlier this year in her nineties.
F. The influences on my physical health have been very big.
G. My wife, three children and six grandchildren are proud of me.
且由下文中的“When I was 59 ... the London Marathon, and I felt inspired.”
38. C C项中的“I also didn’t want time to”和上文中的“I didn’t want to”构成并列关系,且C项中的“a clear purpose”呼应下文中的“set myself goals”。
39. F 由下文中的“because I’m fit and strong, I can manage the conditions and they don’t stop me leading a normal life”可知,跑马拉松对作者的健康影响巨大。
40. B B项中的“every year”呼应上文的“once a year”“never bored”呼应下文中的“I live a happy as well as interesting life”。
