B
David and his family have been farmers for generations. One day they discovered that a distant relative who took over the 80-acre property decided to sell the farm where they were working.
David, who was in his twenties at that time, was determined to buy it no matter how challenging it would be to prepare such a large amount of money in such a short time.
After careful thinking and many sleepless nights, David and his father gathered whatever they could offer for the auction (拍卖).
When they walked into the auction house, they saw over 200 farmers had been there, many of whom were owners of large properties and could easily defeat David. When the auctioneer announced the family's farm, David and his father put in their offer, but they were sure that someone else would make a higher offer.
However, what happened next shocked them. The crowd fell silent. None of the farmers was against the family. The auctioneer called a second time and silence filled the room again. A third time — and still no one offered. The amazed auctioneer put down his gavel (小木槌) and announced that David was the winner.
When he was asked what he thought happened that day, David answered — respect. The farmers refused to offer because they understood that David and his family worked hard at that farm and deserved to buy it back.
"I've had two greatly meaningful days in my life. " David explains. "The first was the day my son was born. The second was that unforgettable day at the auction house. "
24. What trouble did David face before leaving for the auction?
A. Money shortage.

A. He felt that he was not sure to win.
B. He felt that he must make a higher offer.
C. He felt that he could defeat them.
D. He felt that he should go home at once.
26. Why did the auctioneer feel amazed?
A. David offered twice.
B. No one offered except David.
C. The farm was sold at a high price.
D. No farmers supported his work.
27. What would be the best title for the passage?
A. Farmers are all very kind and helpful
B. Two meaningful days in David's life
C. Working hard can pay off in the end
D. Respect makes a difference to a farmer family
