Tanghulu
I don't like eating candy very much. But every winter in Beijing, I like one kind of candy. It is Tanghulu.

Tanghulu is a traditional snack in northern China. But now you can see it in almost every Chinese city.
Tanghulu is made of fruit. Usually, the fruit for Tanghulu is hawthorn. But oranges, strawberries, grapes or even pineapples can also be used to make Tanghulu. There is hard candy outside the fruit. People also use chocolate syrup to cover Tanghulu. Tanghulu is a bit like candy apples in the United States. They are apples with sugar candy outside. The apple is on a stick. So you can hold it like a lollipop (棒棒糖). US kids love it very much.

Tanghulu is also popular in cold countries like Russia. One Tanghulu vendor in Russia sold 8, 000 sticks of Tanghulu in one day! Russian people think the sweet snack is delicious and special.
In the Russian city of Vladivostok, the deputy mayor is a huge fan of Tanghulu. He once bought it himself from a Chinese vendor named Wang Jialiang. Wang then became famous.
Why do we call it Tanghulu? Tang means "sugar". Hulu means "bottle gourd (葫芦)". Some people think Tanghulu has a similar shape to a bottle gourd. So that's why it has this name.
People in other countries like Chinese hawthorns. In Mexico and the United States, people make them into jam and candy. In South Korea and Japan, people make wine (酒) with Chinese hawthorns.
