五、阅读理解。
It is on the 27th of October that WWF China celebrates International Panda Day. WWF China encourages the society to understand that we must care for nature and protect other animals as well as the pandas. We'll welcome the ninth International Panda Day this year. Let's take the time to learn a few things about these cute animals in the wild!
Today, there are about 1,800 pandas in the wild. The animals mainly live on bamboo and other plants. Sometimes, they even eat small animals, such as bamboo rats(鼠). In fact, a very long time ago, pandas mainly ate meat. Their diet turned more than two million years ago. Why? Scientists guess there may have been much more bamboo than meat at the time. This change helped pandas to live.
Wild pandas like to live alone. They show their own area by leaving their scent(气味). Sometimes, male(雄的) pandas do handstands. It is a way of making their scent go higher and farther. This makes them seem bigger and stronger than other pandas.
In the wild, it is not easy for pandas to have babies. Female(雌的) pandas only have one chance to produce babies each year. If a female gives birth to twins, she will usually abandon the weaker baby before long. It's because she doesn't have enough milk to care for both babies. The mother will raise the stronger baby for about two and a half years. The young panda will then leave her and live by itself.
