Did you know that coral reefs can act as underwater walls? As natural “walls” underwater, reefs can help reduce the influence of hurricanes(飓风) on coastal(沿海的)neighborhoods. This may seem surprising,as coral reefs are often among the hardest hit during hurricanes. Yet,scientists have discovered reefs themselves can reduce the influence of hurricanes. In fact, coral reefs work better than man-made sea walls. These projects are not only costly, but also easily damaged(损害) underwater. Such roles of coral reefs have long been noticed by scientists. One 2018 study focused on Ningaloo Reef in Australia. During a heavy hurricane, the Reef well stopped the coastline from being hit hard. However, parts of the Western Australia’s Coast without coral reefs were terribly damaged. More recently, researchers at the University if Miami have reached the same conclusion. They used a special lab simulator(模拟器)to recreate ocean conditions during a heavy hurricane. The researchers used seahives(海蜂巢)to test coral strength in the simulator. They found that seahives with corals could reduce the influence of the “hurricane” by up to 95 percent! However, overfishing and pollution have caused problems to coral reefs. Since 1950,half of the world’s corals have already been lost. At the same time, climate change is causing more extreme(极端的)weather events which put corals under more stress. Because of higher ocean temperatures, some kinds of coral reefs are whitening and dying out.
All hope is not lost, however. Researchers are testing seahives off the coast of Florida. Other scientits are planting new corals. Still others are actively developing coral groups that are suitable for warmer temperatures.
