On Mission to the Frontier

On Mission to the Frontier is a five-character poem by Wang Wei(AD 701-761),one of the most famous poets and artists of the Tang Dynasty. The poem begins with a carriage, tumbleweed and wild geese, which aren't usually connected with royalty(朝廷). 1 This is because he was sent to the frontier by Emperor Tang Xuanzong(AD 685-762) to stay there for about eight years.
In the last four sentences,Wang describes a special scene in the endless desert with “lonely smoke” and a “sinking sun”. 2 It also shows the poet's broad mind. The famous Chinese professor,Wang Guowei(1877-1927),called it “a fantastic scene that is special in time”. 3 At 19,Wang Wei moved to the city of Chang'an,today's Xi'an,to take exams to work for the royalty. 4
Wang Wei was also well-known for his shanshui poetry and shanshui paintings. He built up a farm at Wangchuan, close to Chang'an. 5
His poems were written to be presented with a particular art work. This kind of writing is described as “having poetry in his painting and painting in his poetry.”
