Weifang is in Shandong Province, in the east of China. It is known as the birthplace of kites. Every April, the International Kite Festival will be held here, drawing kite lovers from all over the world. It is said that Mozi made a flying "bird" out of wood in ancient times. It was the earliest kite. With the invention of paper-making, kites made of paper began to appear in China.
Gradually, kite-flying has become one of Chinese people's most favorite outdoor activities since ancient times. In spring, people would go on an outing and fly kites with friends or relatives.
Traditionally, when making kites, Chinese usually use bamboo as the skeleton(骨架)and stick paper onto it, then tie a long string to it. Kites often take the forms of natural flying creatures(生物), like butterflies, bees and birds. But at the same time, Chinese people are making full use of modern techniques. And the shapes of kites are becoming more and more creative. For example, a set of "China Space Station" themed kites was created in 2022. Do you like flying kites?
