五、阅读短文,根据短文内容选择正确答案。
For more than thirty years lighthouses(灯塔)have attracted me. I have traveled along the east coast of the North America from Peggy's Cove Lighthouse in Nova Scotia to the tip of KeyWest to stand at the base(底部)of these lighthouses and be attracted by the height and history and their value to the sea and seafarers(航海家).
I have studied the colors and meanings of the forms and times of the flashing light for a lighthouse. The flashing is to guide ships at night at sea. With the help of lighthouses, those seamen will be guided past dangerous areas on the sea.
Some lighthouses are short buildings, while others are 18 stories high. Some are made of stone while others are made of steel. In some ways they are like people. Some are short and others are tall. However, it is not their height that matters; it is the light inside of them and what they do to guide seamen to safety. Whether a lighthouse is tall or short, it is the light that serves on the sea as a guide to be safe.
The stories of lighthouse keepers who were brave to keep the light burning in storms are many and every lighthouse has a story to tell. Ida Lewis was known as a national hero for her work to keep the light burning at the top of Lime Rock Light, no matter how bad the storms might be.
Lighthouses may be made of brick(砖)and stone or wood and steel, but they are filled with hope. The spirit of lighthouses also guides those in danger to be safe. I never forget the lighthouses that have guided me on my life's journey.
