ON THE TOWER AT YOUZHOU
Where are the great men of the past?

And where are those of future years?
The sky and earth forever last;
Here and now I alone shed tears.
(Translated by Xu Yuanchong)
The poem was written by Chen Ziang in 696. Disappointed at his army life,Chen climbed to the top of Youzhou Tower. When he arrived there,the poet was amazed by the vastness(广袤) of the world. Through asking where the great men of the past and those of the future are,the poem shows that the vastness is not influenced by time or space.
However,human beings are small. Nobody can avoid death and leaving no footprint in the world. Even so,Chen still wanted to do things for his country and people. But the rulers didn't recognize his talents,so Chen felt sad and cried alone.
Chen created a moving scene in the poem. He was angry but not upset. He still thought his country was great. His language is plain(质朴的) but shows deep meanings. So,the poem has been valued for over a thousand years and is still popular now.
