阅读理解 B
Some blind people can be trained to move by echolocation (回声定位). This involves them sending out a sound that reflects off objects near them, with the echoes giving information about their surroundings. Inspired by this ability, Howe Zhu at the University of Technology Sydney in Australia and his colleagues wanted to create smart glasses that similarly inform people about what objects are close to them.
The researchers first took a pair of augmented-reality (增强现实) glasses with two front-facing cameras and built-in speakers. They then designed a smartphone app to process the pictures photographed by the glasses to recognize four objects: a bowl, a cup, book and bottle. The team programmed certain sounds to play from the speakers as the wearer searched for the objects in the room. Each object had a unique sound given to it. For example, when a book came into view, the wearer heard a page turning sound.
To test the glasses, the team selected seven people with different degrees of eyesight impairment and seven sighted people with their eyes covered. They were all seated at a table with the four objects arranged on top. Then, they were asked to pick up one of the objects. In the test, the researchers found that the people who were either blind or had poor eyesight were able to do so correctly 81 percent of the time, compared with a 73 percent success rate for the sighted. "For a sighted person whose eyes were covered, you're taking away a sense," says Zhu, "Therefore, it would take them longer to adapt to being blind and using the glasses," he says.
The test also found that people who were blind or had poor eyesight experienced no extra cognitive (认知的) difficulty while using the glasses, which suggested that the glasses were relatively easy to adapt to.
The researchers now hope to develop this technology to recognize more objects and to allow people to use it while they are walking around.
5. Why does the author mention echolocation in Paragraph 1?
A. To question the function of this ability.
B. To express the concern for its application.
C. To present the difficulties faced by the blind.
D. To explain the inspiration for the new invention.
