An earthquake measuring 9.0 on the Richter scale struck the northeast coast of Japan on 11 March 2011 and caused a massive tsunami that led to the death of almost 20,000 people.
In addition to this great loss of life and the destruction of buildings, the tsunami also caused a number of nuclear accidents.
An emergency at a nuclear power plant complex caused the evacuation (撤离) of hundreds of thousands of neighbouring residents. "In the 65 years after the end of World War II, this is the toughest and the most difficult crisis for Japan," said Naoto Kan, the Japanese prime minister at the time.
Following the earthquake, around 4.4 million households in northeastern Japan were left without electricity, and 1.5 million without water.
