四、阅读理解(共两篇,满分 20 分)
阅读下面的短文,从每题所给的 A、B、C、D 四个选项中选出最佳选项。(共 4 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 8 分)
For more than two days in September 1974, the people of Honduras shut their windows, locked their doors, and stayed inside their homes because hurricane Fifi was outside. By the time Fifi had left, about 8,000 people were dead. Fifi wasn’t a pet dog as the name suggests. It was one of the worst hurricanes that year.
Hurricanes were first given names so that people could differentiate between different storms in the same area. At first, the names were all female names (like Fifi), but after some protest from Women’s Organisations, both male and female names were used, alternating (交替) between genders (性别) storm by storm, giving the names out in the alphabetical (字母表的) order. There are six sets of names for storms and hurricanes that are used over six years and then reused. Each list consists of 21 names, starting with every letter but Q, U, X, Y, and Z. However, the 126 names on the lists are used only for storms forming off the Atlantic coast of the US. There are separate lists for hurricanes that take place in the Pacific.
Max Mayfield is the director of the National Hurricane Centre and it is his responsibility to pick new names for storms off the Atlantic coast. He doesn’t do it alone, though. Hurricane experts from several countries in the Caribbean, Central America, and North America vote on what names will replace the old ones.
1. Fifi is the name of

2. The names for storms and hurricanes

3. Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage?
A. About 8,000 people were killed in the hurricane named Fifi.
B. The 126 names can’t be used for storms that take place in the Pacific.
C. People in Honduras were frightened by Fifi because it was quite damaging.
D. Nobody helps Max Mayfield pick new names for storms off the Atlantic coast.
4. Which list could be used to name five storms forming off the Atlantic coast of the US?
A. David, Helen, Jack, Mike, Lucy.

答案:
1.C 细节理解题。根据第一段的内容尤其是最后两句“Fifi wasn’t a pet dog as the name suggests. It was one of the worst hurricanes that year.”可知,Fifi是一场飓风的名字。故选C项。

阅读下面的短文,根据短文内容回答问题。(共 4 小题;每小题 3 分,满分 12 分)
It is round and yellow and could mean the difference between life and death. The newly - invented pod (舱) has been designed to protect people if an earthquake or a tsunami hits Japan again.
The disaster on 11 March 2011 that swept across Japan’s northeastern coast took 20,000 lives. This prompted Shoji Tanaka, the inventor of the pod, to create a personal floating (漂浮) device that could survive both an earthquake and a tsunami, according to the local newspaper. Tanaka is the president of the equipment company Cosmo Power.
The pod is about 1.2 metres in diameter, with one hatch (舱门), one glass window and two holes to allow air in and water out. Although it is made of plastic, it is stronger than steel. It keeps water out and holds its "passengers" above water, protecting them from floating rubbish. Its bright yellow colour is designed to attract the attention of rescuers.
The pod is also small enough to be kept in the average Japanese home. "Kids will love playing inside it, and those who are anxious about earthquakes will find peace of mind just by keeping it in their house," Tanaka said. "A standard model pod sells for 288,000 yen and we have already received 700 orders, mainly from families, waterfront businesses and fishermen."
5. What is the main purpose of the pod?
6. What does the underlined word "prompted" in paragraph 2 mean?
7. What do Shoji Tanaka’s words mean in the last paragraph?
8. Think of a good title for this passage.
