Water is life's most basic need, but the water crisis is happening all over the world. Over 2 billion people lack safe drinking water, and children in poor areas often miss school to collect water for their families. ____1____ Let's look at a family caught in this crisis. It's possible that they live on less than a dollar a day. When they're thirsty, they can't get a glass of cold water at once. Instead, the women and children go off to collect water. Many walk up to three hours a day to the nearest river to collect water.
Time spent collecting water is time they can't spend in learning to read, write, make money or take care of their family. ____2____ Some women in Africa spend more time collecting water than on any other activity they do in the day. And the journey to get water is dangerous. Many even get hurt. When they make it home, the little water they've collected isn't clean. ____3____ Some families know their water is polluted, but what choice do they have?

Organizations are building wells and teaching communities how to keep water clean. ____4____ Just 20 dollars can provide one person with a chance to be in a clean water project. And this will mean more than clean water because water changes everything. ____5____ With clean water, children can go to school and families can start small businesses. Every small effort counts in this global challenge.
