When you reach for the sky, who do you bring with you? For Capt. Holly Petitt, that’s her daughter, Keely Petitt. Holly and Keely took off on their first flight together as Southwest Airlines’ first mother-daughter pilot team in the airline’s history.
Even though Holly has been flying for Southwest for many years, she said she still got nervous on that memorable Saturday. “I’ll never forget this Saturday. I’m going to tell you some exciting news. Today is a really special day for me,” Holly said in the announcement(通告;宣告). “I would like to introduce your first officer to you, a new member of the Southwest team of pilots. She is my daughter, Keely Petitt. Thank you all for being here. This is a very exciting day for us, and for Southwest Airlines. We are the first mother-daughter partner ever on the flight deck of Southwest Airlines.”
Holly and Keely took turns flying that Saturday, with Mom Holly flying the first leg(一段路程) from Denver to St. Louis and Keely serving as a co-pilot, before switching roles for their second leg from St. Louis to San Jose, California.
“My whole life, I knew I wanted to fly with my mom and that it was so unbelievable,” Keely Petitt said. “As a kid, I always watched her do her job and be at work.” Keely Petitt said she fell in love with flying after she experienced an introductory(入门的;初步的) flight, also known as a discovery flight, when she was 14. “I just remember that first takeoff. The things on the ground got smaller and the sky got bigger,” she recalled. “At that time, I didn’t care what I had to do to make that happen. That was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.”
