The San Yue San Festival is also known as the Zhuang Song Festival. People always celebrate it on the third day of the third lunar month in the traditional Chinese calendar. It is not only the most important festival for Zhuang people, but an important festival among many other ethnic groups.
Every year on the third day of the third lunar month, Zhuang people and people from other ethnic groups will gather together to celebrate it by holding different folk activities, including "song meetings", bamboo pole dancing, making colored eggs, throwing embroidered(绣花的) balls and so on.
Singing folk songs is one of the most activities on the San Yue San Festival. Zhuang people are very fond of singing. They gather outside in the fields to hold "song meetings". Their songs are about life, work, love, happiness, and historical events.
There are many legendary(传说的) stories about the San Yue San Festival. One of the most popular stories in the Zhuang ethnic group is about Liu Sanjie. She was very good at singing. She loved ordinary people and hated the cruel landlords(地主). She inspired people with folk songs. However, the landlords were afraid of her singing. Later Liu Sanjie was persecuted(迫害) by the landlords. She was drowned in a pond, but she went to heaven and became the "Singing Goddess". Many Zhuang people honor Liu Sanjie with the Song Festival, and give another name to this festival—Singing Goddess Day.
