On January 28, 2025, a special show called YangBOT amazed viewers at the CCTV Spring Festival Gala. Directed by Zhang Yimou, the show mixed traditional Chinese yangko dance with modern robot technology.
In the performance, human-shaped robots dressed in bright costumes danced yangko, a lively folk dance from northern China. This dance is often seen during festivals. The most exciting part came when the robots skillfully controlled handkerchiefs, a key element of yangko. Their mechanical arms moved perfectly, making the handkerchiefs spin and fly high in the air. This created a stunning mix of tradition and modern technology.
The robots were developed by Unitree, a Chinese robotics company. In 2021, Unitree's “Ben Ben” robot cows had danced with singer Andy Lau. This time, the robots learned dance moves through AI and used laser navigation(激光导航) to move safely on stage. Their strong joints helped them keep balance even during fast dance steps.
Zhang Yimou said the show aimed to use technology to “give new life to traditions”. It quickly became popular on social media. Young viewers called it “super cool”, while older audiences loved its festive and joyful style. YangBOT is a perfect example of how China's tech progress and cultural pride can work together. As one fan said, “It's like seeing the future and the past dance side by side!”
