I was in a fast river, paddling hard to miss the big rocks. Splash! I went over a small waterfall and floated upside down under the water. What could I do?
Whitewater kayaking(激流皮划艇) is the most thrilling form of kayaking, but there's more you can do with a kayak. You can ride waves like a surfer, compete in a sprint(冲刺) or just pack a tent and go camping someplace far away. From mountain rivers to the open seas, these small boats will go just anywhere you want them to.
To get into kayaking, find a local club. Kayaking gear(用具) is expensive, but a club will have equipment you can borrow. I bought my things on my own before I began kayaking. You can also learn techniques. Not just paddling but safety—what to do if you end up like me, upside down in your kayak. There's a difficult but important trick. It's called rolling.
Clubs will also have a safe place where you can practice rolling. I learned in a swimming pool, instead. It took me three hours to master it, but it was worth every minute. Making mistakes in a safe environment helped me in a difficult one.
Speaking of tough environments, I am from the mountains of western North Carolina. There, top kayakers from around the world come for an annual(一年一次的) race through the Green River Narrows. It's a very dangerous section of the river. During this race, people come to a party on the rocks and watch kayakers go over Gorilla, a waterfall. Even the world's best kayakers finish upside down at the bottom of Gorilla. That challenge is all part of the thrill.
