The traveller carried only a backpack. On 29 August 2024, she finally set foot on Chinese soil. In Irkeshtam, China, the local government warmly welcomed the 75 - year - old woman and the local people performed traditional dances and songs. After that, they gave her a wreath (花环) which stood for friendship and blessings.
Vienna's dream of travelling came from Marco Polo. The Italian explorer travelled to China along the ancient Silk Road over 700 years ago. For her, the journ

y was more than following in Marco Polo's footsteps. She also wanted to see the influence of China's Belt and Road Initiative (一带一路倡议). By sharing her experiences, she now hopes her travels will help people in the West see the true beauty of China.
Vienna's interest in China began over 20 years ago. At that time, a Chinese student stayed at her home, and while learning Chinese with him, Vienna developed a strong interest in Chinese culture.
On the eve of China's National Day, Vienna was invited to Beijing, the capital of China. She had just celebrated her 75th birthday in Xinjiang. When she learnt that China was also celebrating its 75th anniversary, she felt very happy.

. “I will continue to move towards the east coast until I reach Suzhou. The city was described as the ‘Venice of the East’ by Marco Polo,” she said.
Vienna said she was a cultural ambassador (大使) like Marco Polo. “China reported in some Western media is completely different from what I have actually seen. Therefore, I think that it is my duty to introduce the real China. I want people to know about the Silk Road and have a more all - sided understanding of the history and culture of this country,” she said. “I also have a message for women of my age: It's never too late to go after your dreams,” she added.
