MESSAGE BOARD
Are you an organized student? I always admire the students who can organize their things and time well. Lately, I’ve started keeping a study diary to get myself organized, because it’s helpful. What are your ideas? Please share some opinions below.

In my opinion, keeping organized helps us review our lessons in a short time. Don’t leave all the problems until the night before the exams!
Kate
Thanks a lot! I agree. @Ann
Hana
I always spend about five minutes before bedtime tidying up my things. I throw away things I don’t need and put what I need in the proper place.
Kate
I think it’s a good habit to tidy up the things every day. It can help us save much time. @Hana
Mike
My advice is to put a noticeboard in your bedroom. Use board pens to write down something important and make sure they can remind you all the time. The most wonderful part is when I take off something from the board!
Kate
Wow, I’ll take a try. @Mike

What should you do when you come to a word and you think you don’t know what it means? Following some easy steps can help you.
●Read it.
First, read it to yourself. It might sound like a word you know. Sometimes you know a word in your head but you don’t know what it looks like in print. So if you match what you know with what you read, you will get the word!
●Use context.
If that doesn’t work, take the next step: look at the context—the other words and sentences around it. Read this sentence: When it rained, the dog looked for shelter in the doorway. If the word “shelter” doesn’t look familiar, look at the words around it. They might give you useful information and help you understand the whole sentence or passage.
●Use word parts.
If the context doesn’t help, look at the parts of the word. Does it have any parts you know? These can help you understand what it means. If you don’t know the meaning of “miner”, try looking at parts of the word. You might know that a mine is a place underground where people get coal and other valuable things. A lot of times, “-er” at the end of a word means “a person who does something”. So a miner might be someone who works in a mine.
If the three steps above don’t work, you can take the fourth step—look it up! You can find the word in a dictionary—either in a printed one or online.
Nobody knows the meaning of every word, but good readers know how to understand the words they don’t know.
1. How many steps are mentioned in the passage when you come across an unknown word?
