For centuries, China has been known as a nation of etiquette(礼仪). There were many kinds of greeting manners(问候礼仪) in ancient China. Among them, the fist and palm salute(拱手礼) was a classic one. Today, though Chinese usually shake hands when meeting others, people still make fist and palm salutes when they visit someone during the Spring Festival or go to someone’s parties and so on.
The fist and palm salute has a history of over 3,000 years. Since the Western Zhou Dynasty, people had used this way. In ancient times, if people met a stranger, they would prepare for a fight if they had to, so hands were always ready for holding weapons. Holding hands together pointed to oneself was a meaning of expressing kindness. Later it became one of traditional Chinese manners when meeting each other or showing thanks.
How to do the fist and palm salute properly? First, stand at attention(立正). Then, if you are a man, the right hand forms a half fist, and then the left hand holds the right hand in front of your chest(胸). Next, watch each other in the eyes, raise both hands to the brow(额头), bend down and shake hands towards each other three times. Also, you could say some lucky greeting words to each other.
As for women, the only difference is that the left hand forms a half fist, and then the right hand holds the left hand in front of the chest.
For us Chinese, I think we should learn more about the traditional manners so that our culture can be passed down for generations(代) and let more and more people know our Chinese culture.
