Imagine a tiny 3D printer small enough to be held in your hand. This remarkable device allows you to quickly create custom objects wherever you are, for example, a crucial part for medical use.
Researchers from MIT and the University of Texas at Austin have made a significant progress in bringing this vision to life with their new chip - based 3D printer. It uses a millimeter - sized photonic (光子) chip that emits adjustable beams of light. When these beams of visible light hit the resin (树脂), it solidifies into a specific shape. Unlike traditional 3D printers, it doesn't have any moving parts. Instead, it uses the chip to guide the light beams. This portable 3D printer could find many uses, such as helping doctors produce custom medical device parts or allowing engineers to rapidly make prototype designs on site. “This system completely changes what a 3D printer can be. It's no longer a large box in a lab; it's handheld. It's exciting to think about the new possibilities this opens up and how it could transform 3D printing,” says senior author Jelena Notaros, a professor at MIT.
Modulating (调节) visible light accurately was a challenge, typically requiring complicated heating systems. Instead, the team used liquid crystal to create compact modulators on the chip, with unique and precise light control.
Their next goal is to develop a chip that can project a visible light hologram (全息投影) into resin, enabling rapid 3D printing in a single step. “To be able to do that, we need a completely new photonic chip design. We already laid out a lot of what that final system would look like in this paper. And, now, we are excited to continue working towards this ultimate demonstration,” Jelena Notaros says.
