B

Miriam Lancewood, from the Netherlands, has a university degree, but she doesn’t have a fixed(固定的) home or a job. She doesn’t have a car or a computer or a mobile phone. And she’s very happy this way.
Miriam was living in New Zealand, in 2010. Once she began to ask herself: Could she live without technology, electricity or other people? She was not sure about that, so she and her husband Peter decided to have a try and live in the wilderness(野外).
They have lived right in the middle of the wilderness of New Zealand’s North Island. They live mostly in a tent or a simple hut with no tools. Sometimes, when they run out of things they need, they go back to town. Miriam sometimes plays the guitar and sings on the street to make a little money or they don’t need anything from anyone.
In 2017, a book by Miriam came out—Woman in the Wilderness, which tells what she learned about nature, other people and herself. Life in the wilderness taught her how to manage with simple things, how to be alone, how to get bored, how to be afraid. She also talks about how she had to learn to use a bow and arrow to catch animals with, and the first time she killed a goat with them.
Miriam and her husband Peter met in India. They spent two months in the Himalayas, backpacking and meeting people who lived very simply in the mountains. That attracted(吸引) them both and once they were back in New Zealand, the idea of living in the wilderness became possible and finally real. She does not regret choosing this way of life. “If people don’t agree with the way I live, well, it doesn’t matter, does it?” she says.
