(一)
Coral reefs (珊瑚礁) are home to thousands of living things in the sea, and they help protect the coast. Coral reefs are made up of hundreds or even thousands of tiny animals—corals. However, when temperature rises, corals will turn white and easily get sick. Only 10% to 30% of coral reefs will survive if the world’s temperature rises by 1.5℃.
Researchers have mapped out the coral reefs that are most likely to survive as the world’s weather warms up. They lie mostly along the northern coast of Cuba. Areas in the Bahamas, eastern Jamaica and Haiti can also find some.
Those coral reefs with the highest chance of survival are mapped out to protect them from other forms of damage (破坏). In this way, the coral reefs will survive, and the homes they provide for sea plants and animals will be kept as well.
However, the researchers strongly point out we still need to keep temperature rises as small as possible because even these reefs will be harmed by a rise of 2℃.
