I am often asked what I miss most about living in China. The answer is food, especially food from Din Tai Fung(DTF). Every Friday I visited the restaurant while living in Hangzhou a few years ago.
One good thing about DTF is that it's a global chain(连锁店). Last month, when I flew back home to Los Angeles from Brussels, I went to a local branch(分店) with my parents. My mother's favorite dish there was the sweet and sour ribs. Ribs aren't her cup of tea, but she just couldn't say no to the ones at DTF. My father loved the hot and sour soup. “Now I've found my joy of life,” he said with a big smile. We had a really big meal that night, chatting happily over our favorite dishes.
When I was in China, I learnt that Yang Bingyi, a man from Shanxi, opened DTF as a cooking oil shop in Taipei in 1958. But in the 1970s his business went under. To turn things around, Yang decided to turn half of his shop into a restaurant. Soon the xiaolongbao in that half attracted crowds of hungry customers, making it well known.
Today, the xiaolongbao is still the star of the show at DTF. Everyone has their own way of eating it. I love it too, but the must - eat dish for me is always the spicy shrimp wontons. It's not my problem, is it? After all, different strokes for different folks.
