六、阅读理解(时文阅读)
Among the traditional clothes, qipao, a kind of dress with a history of over 100 years, have become a symbol of beauty and elegance of Chinese women.
Illustrator (插画师) Lu Mei, also a qipao lover, has been creating paintings of a woman in qipao for years. Her book Cheongsam with beautiful illustrations tells how the style of qipao has changed in the past 100 years.
Lu Mei has been interested in qipao since she read a book by famous writer Zhang Ailing. In 2007, when she was asked to draw the illustrations for a book by Zhang Ailing and the clothes in the book, Lu agreed and started her research on the kind of dress. According to some books, people first wore qipao in the late 1910s and they looked like the robes (长袍) which were long and wide and only worn by men at that time. In the 1930s, qipao were made into a different style—slimmer cut (剪裁) and higher split (开叉).
"Nowadays qipao become a fashion choice for women, but they are different from what they used to be. Because of the film In the Mood for Love, qipao now are much more close-fitting," Lu said.
Lu Mei loves qipao, but she doesn't often wear them in her everyday life. Lu hopes readers can learn something meaningful behind the clothes.
