新素材 科普知识 When you think about a coming Maths test, do you get nervous? If yes, you are far from alone. Maths anxiety(焦虑) becomes a common feeling among students around the world. A study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America shows students in countries with higher levels(水平) of Maths anxiety may get lower Maths grades.
A study from the University of Cambridge shows many people feel worried, nervous, even strong fear when facing a Maths problem in daily life. Another report from The Guardian says that these people might try not to face something about numbers. That is to say, they would not work on jobs about Maths, such as Science and Technology.
However, people with Maths anxiety aren't sure to be bad at Maths. “If a child has Maths anxiety, don't conclude(断定) that he is not good at Maths. He may have a really bad experience with Maths and there are ways to make it better,” Daniel Ansari told the London Free Press.
Also, there are ways to relieve Maths anxiety. If you're feeling anxious before a Maths exam, it may be helpful to spend a few minutes understanding those feelings before the exam begins. “You may have a fast heartbeat, but that doesn't mean you will fail,” Sian Beilock, a psychologist in the USA told the BBC. Ian Lyons, at Georgetown University in the USA, thinks just like some speakers feel nervous before giving a speech, this nervous feeling could motivate (激励) us to do better.
