The next day they set off again very early. They walked a few miles and then came to a big ditch(沟). It was very wide. There were a lot of rocks(岩石)in the ditch.
“How can we cross the ditch?” Dorothy asked her friends.
“We can't fly over it,” the Scarecrow said. “And we can't jump over it. So we must stay here.”
The Lion looked at the ditch and said, “I can jump over it.”
“Can you?” the Scarecrow said. “That's good! You can take us across on your back, one by one.”
“Who wants to go first?” the Lion said. He was a little afraid at first but he wanted to help his friends.
“Me!” the Scarecrow said and he got on the Lion's back. The Lion jumped across the ditch easily. Then he jumped back and took Dorothy and Toto. Finally, he took the Tin Woodman across the ditch.
The Lion was tired after his ▲ big jumps.
“Let's have a rest before we start walking again,” he said.
Later in the afternoon, they came to a wide river. They could see a beautiful country on the other side of it. There were green fields and a lot of flowers. They could also see the yellow brick(砖)road.
