The Story of Nian
A long time ago there was a monster(怪物) in China. This monster was very big. It was called Nian and it came out every year at the beginning of spring. Nian ran after the people in the village. It liked to eat children best. Every year people tried to do something. But the monster didn't go away.


The night before the next Chinese New Year, the monster came again. Suddenly the monster heard a big BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! The monster was afraid of the noise. It stopped. It saw fire. Then it saw people wearing red clothes. The monster didn't like noise, and it didn't like fire. So it ran away.
The next day was Chinese New Year. The people came out of their houses. They looked around. They saw lots of red things. "The monster is afraid of big noise and red things!" the people said. People were very happy and said, "Every year we will wear red clothes. Then the monster won't come again." So every Chinese New Year's Eve, people all put on new hats and new clothes and lit firecrackers. And they went to see their families and friends.
